Plymouth Man Jumps in River to Elude Police

A Plymouth man is in the Marshall County Jail after jumping in the river to avoid police detention.

Shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, officers from the Plymouth Police Department responded to an unknown incident at E. Garro Street and Water Street.  When they arrived, they reportedly found 26-year-old Matthew O’Brien wielding a knife and a hatchet.

Police say O’Brien battered another man with the hatchet prior to their arrival.  O’Brien then reportedly attempted to harm himself with the knife in his possession when an officer deployed a taser.  One prong hit O’Brien’s leather knife sheath and was rendered ineffective.

Then, still in possession of his weapons, O’Brien ran toward the Yellow River and jumped in to try to elude police, according to the report.  However, he was quickly detained and taken to the hospital to receive medical attention.  He was later released from the hospital and booked into the Marshall County Jail on preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement.
