A coalition including Marshall, Elkhart, Kosciusko, and St. Joseph Counties will receive $600,000 in funds from a regional Brownfield Assessment Coalition grant.
The grant funds provide communities with an opportunity to transform contaminated sites to locations that show the promise for economic development.
The Brownfield Assessment Coalition grant was awarded to the Michiana Area Council of Governments to its target areas in the coalition partnership.
The area of west downtown Plymouth expects to benefit from the funding. The area will undergo environmental assessments on sites that may be contaminated with hazardous waste, pollutants and/or petroleum. From there, the preparation of cleanup plans begins along with the development of a multi-site reuse plan for the City of Plymouth. Community outreach activities are a part of the plans for the use of funding.
Other coalition partnership projects include the gateway between the City of Warsaw and the Town of Winona Lake, downtown neighborhoods in the City of Elkhart, and the Town of Lakeville.
