The Bremen Town Council voted to move forward with acquiring the Jackson Street property as originally planned.
The town was out-bid on the property at 121 S. Jackson Street during a sheriff’s sale in May. Town Attorney Anthony Wagner explained to the council during a meeting following the sale that the town will exercise eminent domain in order to obtain the property for a public purpose. The town plans to demolish the structure and create a gathering place there for public events.
Wagner said he spoke to the bidders who won the property and they had a “handshake deal” to sell the property back to the town for what it will appraise for in a subsequent appraisal process. Wagner said the bidders won’t lose any money and that it was a friendly transaction.
The Bremen Town Council members voted unanimously to complete the transaction once the appraisal comes back. In that motion, they noted that the tranaction should not be more than $22,500.
Wagner has the purchase agreement and deed ready for when the time comes to continue with the paperwork.
