An Elkhart man is in custody after reportedly fleeing from police when an officer attempted a traffic stop on Friday evening.
According to the Bremen Police Department, an officer spotted a black Ford Expedition and learned the vehicle was stolen after obtaining license plate information. The officer attempted a traffic stop near State Road 331, but the suspect fled northbound into St. Joseph County, according to the report.
The pursuit went through the town of Wyatt and then eastbound on Pierce Road. Police say the vehicle continued northbound on Beech Road in Osceola. While in town, the suspect reportedly jumped from the moving vehicle and ran through a yard. The vehicle continued on its path, without the driver, and struck a tree.
It wasn’t much longer before the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Daniel Richard Hurt, was apprehended on Bancroft St. in Osceola.
Hurt faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement, conversion, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, and reckless driving. He remains in the Marshall County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.
The Bremen Police Department was assisted by the Indiana State Police, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.
Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
