“Rising Above” Event to Celebrate Togetherness Displayed During Flood Recovery

After historic floods impacted about 250 Marshall County homes in February of last year, many dedicated community members, as well as friendly volunteers from a far, have been actively engaging in the recovery process.

Director of Marshall County Long Term Recovery Operations Linda Yoder shared that more than 800 volunteers worked 21,704 hours in the past 13 months to help local families recover.

To recognize those individuals and honor the spirit of the community that brought everyone together, a special event has been scheduled for later this summer. Director Yoder mentioned that the plans to host this event have been in the works for awhile.

She explained, “It’s been a part of the plan from the start, knowing that it can be therapeutic for those that have been impacted by the flood and it also is a great way for us to recognize the hundreds of people that have been involved in the recovery efforts.”

The “Rising Above” community event will be held in River Park Square from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 19th.

In the time building up to the event, officials are encouraging people to send in pictures of their organizations and the volunteers who worked on various projects over the last year. Yoder said they’re planning to create a video which will help emphasize the impact of last February’s flooding.

She shared, “The video is all about capturing the scope of the event and the work that went into recovering form the event. It will be something we can give to the Marshall County Historical Society.”

Yoder noted a lot of times people don’t think to relay their stories about major events like this until years later. She said she wants to ensure that the Historical Society gets a detailed account of the flood and recovery efforts while the memories are still fresh in peoples’ minds.
