Students at the John Glenn School Corporation will not have to make up any days that were canceled due to inclement weather.
The John Glenn School Board members discussed the issue at length Tuesday night, according to Recording Secretary Lisa Sleek. School was closed eight days this school year due to snow, ice and extreme temperatures. Five days will be used that were built into the calendar so that leaves three days to be made up.
Sleek explained that because the John Glenn High School and the John Glenn School Corporation are designated as Performance Qualified Schools, the Indiana Department of Education says the board can decide to make up the three canceled days by instructional time and not actual instructional days.
Previously, Superintendent Richard Reese said the minimal instructional requirement is 300 minutes in the elementary school and 360 minutes of instructional time at the high school. Reese indicated that both schools exceed that requirement.
With that determination, the school board voted to end school on the previously approved day of May 30. Certified teachers will also end school on their previously scheduled day.
Support staff members have the option of working an extra three days to make up for missed pay on the days the school corporation was closed for inclement weather.
