Bremen Town Council Discusses Wastewater Ordinance Amendment

The Bremen Town Council members reviewed an amendment to the wastewater ordinance last week.

Wastewater, Sanitary and Storm Water Department Superintendent Matt Cunningham told the council members that there are new requirements that need to be added to the existing paperwork.

“We have phosphorus and copper limits placed upon us so basically what we’re doing is we’re adding that so we can add it to the industrial permit,” said Cunningham.

There is also a change for contractors who do sewer work for homeowners.

“Right now, if the contractors do some kind of sewer work for a homeowner, there isn’t really teeth to it to let us come back.  A lot of times they won’t call us and come and inspect it.  They can just bury it and we don’t know anything about it.  We put something in there that we can penalize them.  They can dig it back up or something.”

The amendment also outlines surcharge limits.

“We get dumped a certain amount of suspended solids or BODs we charge 11 cents per pound.  That rate was the same as a violation was.  They should be separated.  So what we were doing was we surcharged the company and had them on a violation.  So, we separated it.”

He added that once the ordinance passes, the industrial permits will be updated.

The Bremen Town Council members approved the ordinance on first reading.  Additional readings will occur in future meetings.
