Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel discussed with the county council members this week a concern about exempt and non-exempt status for some employees at the Sheriff’s Department.
Hassel said that officials from the consulting firm Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele marked some employees exempt from overtime status by title only, when Sheriff Hassel said the status is determined by job description.
“You have to determine it by the job they’re doing,” said Hassel. “When I rewrote those job descriptions I understood every job that all my personnel were doing. Nobody in these positions are spending 80 percent of their work day doing administrative and supervision duties. They’re on the floor and they’re working.”
By that reason, Hassel classifies those employees as non-exempt for overtime.
The council members appreciated Sheriff Hassel’s comments and will support his recommendation. The comments that Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele provide are just guidance and can be taken under consideration for council approval, but it’s not required.
