The John Glenn School Board members received an update this week on the Lilly Grant in a presentation by John Glenn Career Counselor Stephanie Reynolds.
The four-year, $248,000 Lilly Grant funds a College and Career Counselor and Academic and Attendance Coach. They work with fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at North Liberty Elementary, Walkerton Elementary, and Urey Middle School. John Glenn was one of only a select bunch of school corporations to receive this grant.
It’s been a year into the program where Reynolds, along with North Liberty Counselor and Counselor Coordinator Melanie Heiser and Career Aide Mackenzi Lowry has visited with students about potential careers and pathways to achieve goals. When discussions are held with students, parents are notified of the information so they are aware of what path their child is taking.
This coincides with the state in the graduation pathways initiative to begin next school year.
As part of the program, the students can participate in the Career Café. Students will have the chance to hear from leaders who will give students an idea about their roles in their job and in the community. Nursing, law, education, trades, and other professionals are lined up to present information to the students in middle school. Job site visits are also part of the initiative.
The work is extensive. Other school corporations have looked to John Glenn’s model to implement in their own capacity.
More information about the Lilly Grant can be heard during the Feb. 17 Maximum Impact program that airs at noon on MAX 98.3 FM.
