The Marshall County Commissioners could soon take action on an ordinance that would establish a booking fee for offenders convicted of a crime.
Sheriff Matt Hassel discussed the fee with the commissioners in a previous setting where a $50 fee would be assessed as part of a defendant’s court fines and costs when sentenced. The fee can be waived in certain circumstances. The money collected would be used toward inmate jail programs.
No decisions were made during Monday morning’s commissioners meeting. The commissioners will take time to review the information. It would need to be published and set for a public hearing since a fee would be established in the ordinance.
Sheriff Hassel also presented quotes for new police vehicles. He said the Dodge Durango is now pursuit rated so quotes were provided for a V8 and a V6 for purchase. He also presented information on three other vehicles that would replace two and one that was totaled after an officer hit a deer while responding to a call.
The commissioners did not make a decision during their meeting, but they will review the information to discuss in a future meeting. Sheriff Hassel said that he has about $133,000 available for vehicle purchases and the government allowance price for police cruisers went up to $34,000 from $27,000.
