Tips for preventing frozen pipes are being shared by local water departments. With subzero temperatures in the forecast, freeze warnings remain in effect in many places, including Knox, North Judson, and Hamlet.
Officials suggest letting your water run at a small stream. Some cities and towns may offer credits on your utility bill, but others, including Plymouth, will not.
Plymouth Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson says it’s also a good idea to make sure you know where your main water shutoff valve is. He says it’s usually where the water line enters the building or by the water meter. If you have a frozen pipe and it bursts, knowing where the shutoff valve is can help you turn the water off, before it causes major damage.
Additionally, make sure all crawlspace vents and exterior basement doors and windows are closed tightly and eliminate all drafts. Open cabinet doors to let heat circulate around the piping, especially during the evening when water usage is at its lowest. Davidson says you can also insulate or install heat trace on pipes. You should also make sure all exterior spigots are off and hoses are disconnected.
