Plymouth Council Agrees to Move $750,000 into Rainy Day Fund

The City of Plymouth is building up its savings as the 2018 budget year comes to an end. The city council agreed Wednesday to transfer $750,000 from the General Fund to the Rainy Day Fund, at the recommendation of Clerk-Treasurer Jeanine Xaver. She said the transfer will bring the Rainy Day Fund balance up to about $3.6 million and noted that there’s plenty of money in the General Fund to cover it.

Council President Pro Tempore Don Ecker Jr. called the move a great step. “As I remind everybody, it was a commitment by this council that we were going to work to replenish that fund because we do need that in the events of emergencies, and we did tap it for emergency purposes on a couple occasions,” he said. “I want to commend, personally, the department heads and your staffs for working hard to stay within the budgets – I know it’s been a tough year with the floods that we had and a couple other things that went on – and you, as well, Jeanine, for holding everybody accountable for it.”

Also during Wednesday’s meeting, council members granted Xaver permission to make year-end budget transfers and forward year-end encumbrances as necessary, to close out the 2018 budget.
