John Glenn School Board Names New Superintendent

The John Glenn School Board members named the new superintendent of schools Thursday night in a special meeting.

Christopher Winchell was selected from several applicants to replace retiring Superintendent Richard Reese.  Winchell will assume the duties of superintendent on July 1, 2019.  The school board did unanimously approve his contract Thursday night which runs through June 30, 2022.

Winchell began his career at John Glenn Community School Corporation in 2004 teaching Math at Urey Middle School and four years later at the high school.  In 2009, he became the assistant principal at the John Glenn High School and then the associate principal in 2013.  In 2017, he was selected as the superintendent at Union County/College Corner Joint School District and is now returning to where it all started.  He said he’s happy to be returning.

“It’s a unique opportunity when you have a chance to come back home so to speak,” said Winchell.  “Even though I didn’t attend high school in Walkerton, having spent 13 years of my career here it’s very much become my home.”

He said he will focus on the safety and well-being of the students and staff as he begins his work at John Glenn.  He also wants to build on athletics and fine arts programs to keep up success in those programs and maintain fiscal responsibility.
