Plymouth School Board Approves Six New High School Courses

Plymouth High School will soon be offering courses in Education Professions, Cybersecurity, and Aviation. The school board Monday approved the addition of six new high school courses for the 2019-2020 school year.

Superintendent Andy Hartley said the new Aviation Flight and Aviation Operations classes are a partnership involving the North Central Area Vocational Cooperative, the Plymouth Municipal Airport, and a new flight school that’s being developed. Through their coursework, Hartley said students would have the chance to spend time in a flight simulator and log five hours of flight observation time.

He said the program would be housed at Plymouth Airport and taught by certified flight instructors. Hartley cited a growing demand for pilots as one of the reasons for the new program, noting that many pilots are expected to retire within the next decade.

Other new courses would introduce students to the fields of education and human and social services. All of those classes are expected to qualify for career and technical education funding from the state.

Additionally, Plymouth High School plans to offer students the chance to complete a community service project for school credit, as part of the state’s Graduation Pathways. Principal Jim Condon explained that any project would have to be approved by him in advance. He said the course would be a great opportunity for young people to give back to the community.
