A job description and wage for the newly created position of a part-time court security officer was presented to Marshall County Council members Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Matt Hassel explained that he recently received a job description and wage recommendation from Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele after initially submitting a suggested description in April.
“They provided two ranges.” He explained, “Leaving it as a civilian POLE 1, the range of was $15.60 to $18.88. The other option, they said to compare it to a full-time security POLE 3, which had a range between $18.87 and $23.19.
For clarification, POLE stands for a Protective Occupations Law Enforcement position. Hassel recommended going with the POLE 1 salary range since that would allow him to attract a few former law enforcement officers.
There was a unanimous vote to approve the job description as presented. However, when it came to the wage, there was a concern about consistency. Councilman Jon Van Vactor mentioned that in the 2018 Salary Ordinance part-time turnkey dispatchers are classified as POLE 1 position and their salary is listed as $12.85 per hour. In order to stay consistent within that classification, he recommended using that salary instead.
Council President Judy Stone asked Hassel if he was going to wait until the new year to implement this position but he said he’d like to get it filled as soon as possible. Since the individual who is hired will start in 2018, they’ll be eligible for the pay raise that was approved by council members in the 2019 salary ordinance.
Councilman Van Vactor made a motion to amend the 2018 salary ordinance to list the part-time court security officer’s wage as $12.85 per hour. In that same motion, he recommended that the wage for that position be listed as $13.35 in the 2019 salary ordinance. His motion was supported and passed unanimously.
