Enrollment numbers are up at Triton Community Schools. Superintendent Jeremy Riffle shared there are more than 20 new students attending Triton according to this year’s average daily membership count.
Riffle said that while the ADM is a bit subjective because it only provides a snapshot of one day, school officials are still excited about the increase. He said it’s especially encouraging since there’s been a projection floating around that low birthrates would affect school enrollment numbers.
However, the fact that Triton isn’t following the anticipated trend has school officials reconsidering some changes that were made to prepare for the decline in enrollment.
Riffle explained, “Six or seven years ago is when they really came out with the data to say that class sizes were going to start kind of moving downward because of birthrates and so on.”
He continued, “So we actually condensed, and many schools around us did the same thing, we condensed from four sections to three sections. So now we’re right on the cusp of going the opposite way.”
Riffle indicated that in order to address the matter, building administrators are continuously checking the teacher to pupil ratio to ensure that the number of students in a classroom isn’t having a negative impact on instruction.
