Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel will be gathering materials to help arm people with drug free knowledge if successful in obtaining two grants.
He asked permission from the county commissioners last week to apply for workbook materials for the DARE programs in Marshall County. He also will apply for a $1,700 grant to purchase workbooks for inmates and instruction materials for a Matrix Program for jail inmates to be taught by representatives from Marshall County Community Corrections.
Both grants will come from the Drug Free Community Grant, if successful.
The commissioners unanimously approved the requests as presented.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger offered information during his report that the judges, prosecutors, and Marshall County Community Corrections are working on a plan to reduce the number of pretrial detainees and non-violent offenders sentenced to low-level crimes in an effort to reduce the jail population. Clevenger noted that the results may take some time to realize.
