More than thirty Marshall County residents turned up at the Rees Theater on Saturday to participate in a clean-up event.

Representatives report that an energized group of about 34 volunteers worked for hours, clearing out old theater seats, removing curtains, debris, insulation and carpet. By the end of the day two large dumpsters were filled and all unneeded materials were cleared from the building.

Co-owner of SRKM Architecture and Rees Theater Fundraising Committee Team Member Brent Martin said he helped out on Saturday and remarked that community’s commitment to this project really shows.

Another way that community support for this project is apparent is through generous monetary contributions. Earlier this month, more than $150,000 was raised during the “Putting on the Rees” Gala. Martin noted that Rees Theater fundraisers have continued to work with donors since the gala was held on October 5th.

The fundraising committee currently has over $1.1 million. Martin said they’re well on their way to reaching their $1.5 million goal. He explained they’re attempting to raise that amount of money by Wednesday, October 31st in order to secure a $300,000 Regional Cities Grant.

By restoring the Rees Theater to its former glory, officials are hoping the historic building will be an anchor in the downtown area and help continue the development of the arts in the community through live theater, concerts, other entertainment and the showing of seasonal films.

Plans also call for the structure to serve as a venue for celebrating community milestones, hosting educational seminars, meetings, and promotional activities. The renovated theater will also provide a unique place for people to hold wedding receptions, birthday parties, and anniversary celebrations.
