Argos Town Council Approves Pay Raise for Part-Time Police Officers

The Argos Town Council members considered allowing a pay raise for part-time police officers during their most recent meeting.

At the Town Council’s first meeting in October, Police Chief Corey Bowman proposed raising the part-time rate a few dollars in order to stay competitive with surrounding departments. Before coming to a decision, council members requested to see some of the rates that other departments pay their part-time employees.

When the council met again, Chief Bowman brought a few figures to present. He explained that the Culver Police Department pays their part-time officers $18, Bourbon PD pays $17.50 and the New Carlisle Police Department and Indiana University Police Department in South Bend both pay $20 per hour.

In addition to noting some of the surrounding police departments, Bowman also included a few places that hire part-time police officers for security purposes since those are employment opportunities they’re also competing with.

He told members that part-time officers who work for the Lake Maxincuckee Patrol get paid $35 per hour. Bowman also noted that officers who work part-time security for Woodlawn Hospital get $28 per hour and those who work security for Lake City Bank get paid $30 per hour.

Under the recommendation of Police Chief Bowman, council members approved a $2 pay raise for part-time officers. That would bump the Argos Police Department part-time pay up from $16 per hour to $18 per hour.
