Habitat for Humanity was given the “go-ahead” from Bourbon Town council members this week to apply for a community grant that would spur housing development in the area.

Bourbon Town Council President Les McFarland explained that the organization is looking to assist the Town of Argos, as well as Bourbon with the grant. Their plan is to build housing on pieces of property that the towns have acquired through the removal of blighted and abandoned structures.

He noted that Habitat would be building low to moderate income housing on these pieces of land that are now clear and ready for development. McFarland said Bourbon officials cleared an eyesore from a property on East Center Street and indicated that would be the spot where new housing would be developed.

McFarland added that in addition to increasing the overall population, a housing development could help boost school enrollment numbers as well by providing more local housing options for families.

He said Bourbon officials will continue to coordinate with representatives at Habitat for Humanity about the housing development and multi-town grant opportunity.
