Energy savings upgrades are paying off for the Culver Community Schools Corporation. It saved more than $364,000 in energy costs, as the result of guaranteed energy savings projects in 2011 and 2013. That’s more than $100,000 beyond what was originally guaranteed.
Representatives from Performance Services gave an update on the results of the projects to the school board last week. The work involved upgrading building automation systems, installing new rooftop air handling units and high-efficiency boilers at the middle/high school, putting new classroom units in the elementary school, upgrading lighting, and other improvements.
The projects reduced the schools’ yearly energy consumption from 70,000 BTUs per square foot to just over 55,000, according to Performance Assurance Liaison and Marketing Administrator Shana Lopez. She said the amount of energy saved by the schools would be enough to power 229 homes for a year.
Now, the Culver School Board is thinking about working with Performance Services on more energy savings projects, including a new roof at the middle/high school, new LED lighting, and even the possible addition of solar panels on school grounds.
