John Glenn High School Changes Backpack Policy

John Glenn High School Principal William Morton updated the school board Tuesday night on operations at the school since the start of the school year.

He noted that the backpack policy has changed. Students are no longer allowed to carry backpacks into classrooms. They must be left in their lockers during classroom instruction.

Board President Janice Ryan questioned the policy. Morton explained that it’s become a safety precaution for students and staff. In a survey, Morton said teachers have found them to take up space in already small classrooms. In many instances, students have left their backpacks in the hallway during class because of limited space. That alternative doesn’t allow students to be in possession of their things which can lead to theft and tampering. He mentioned that option also poses a safety hazard in the event of an emergency.

In some cases, Morton said illegal substances have been found in backpacks and those situations have always been handled without any other problems by the staff and students.

Morton said students are required to use their lockers this year which has worked out well so far. There were a few issues the first few days of school for students to get accustomed to the changes and some using lockers for the first time. One minute has been added to the passing class time in order for students to get the necessary items from their lockers for the next class.
