Plymouth School Board Switches Bus Drivers to Hourly Pay Rate

The Plymouth Community School Corporation is changing the way it pays its bus drivers. Last week, the school board approved a revised set of employment conditions.

Superintendent Andy Hartley said bus drivers will now be paid an hourly rate, rather than a daily one. “We were getting some feedback from the Department of Labor, and it helps us to better track and ensure our ability to pay overtime,” he told board members. “So we wanted to make sure we’re doing things the right way there. The document you see before you reflects that change. We have discussed this with drivers. They are aware, and we worked to ensure that in that change, if their route doesn’t change, then they’re not going to lose money off of that.”

Under the revised conditions of employment, the school corporation’s current bus drivers will be paid a base hourly rate between $21.25 and $29.54. New hires will be paid $19, $21, or $23 an hour, depending on their years of experience and level of licensing.
