Motorcycle Rider Dies in Weekend Crash near LaPaz

A motorcycle rider is dead, after a Sunday morning crash near LaPaz. Marshall County Police say it happened around 1:00 a.m. on U.S. 6, east of Michigan Road. Officers believe Dustin Holderread was riding his 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle at a high rate of speed heading east, when he crashed into the back of a 2003 Honda Civic that was going the same direction.

Police think that caused Holderread to lose control of the motorcycle. He was reportedly found unconscious by a passerby and emergency responders.

Both Holderread and the driver of the Civic, identified as Ricky Rasberry, were taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Holderread was later pronounced dead. Rasberry’s condition is still unknown, according to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

It was the second motorcycle accident near LaPaz in the span of a few hours.

Around 5:35 p.m. Saturday, Jeremy C. Lechlitner, 37, of Elkhart, was reportedly heading north on U.S. 31 with a group of motorcycles, when another motorcycle in the group slowed down. Lechlitner told officers that caused him to swerve and run off the roadway into the median. Marshall County Police say he was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The LaPaz Fire and EMS departments also responded to both incidents.
