The South Bend School Corporation recently closed the Greene Township School in St. Joseph County, which could be a benefit to the John Glenn School Corporation.
John Glenn Superintendent Richard Reese told school board members Tuesday night that some students from the Greene Township School have already enrolled for this coming school year at John Glenn.
Reese said board members Janice Kain and Curt Pletcher recently met with Greene Township Trustee Sandra Ort to discuss future possibilities. Greene Township residents don’t want to lose the building, but John Glenn officials are not interested in purchasing the building.
Greene Township officials have yet to officially to decide to break away from the South Bend School Corporation.
Reese explained that there are several options that could happen including a joint resolution between South Bend and John Glenn concerning the location of students and where they gather their education, a measure on the ballot to transfer the building to John Glenn, or the Greene Township officials could take it over for their own community needs.
For now, the Greene Township school building will be listed with the state as available which will allow a charter school to lease the building for $1 a year.
Reese stressed that nothing is happening yet. If something does happen, it won’t be for another couple of years in order for the legal process to run its course. The John Glenn School Board will hold future discussions concerning this venture in the coming months.
