Work on Culver Community Middle/High School’s secure entrance is moving along. As part of the project, a new main entrance is being built where the library was, while other areas are being reconfigured.
Superintendent Karen Shuman gave an update to the school board Monday. “The nurse’s office room has been created,” she said. “They’re creating a new wall in there for the restroom that’s being developed in that room. They’ve framed out the concrete to pour, and the library is empty, awaiting their arrival to construct the new vestibule walls.”
The project is being funded mainly by proceeds from a bond refinancing a few years ago. However, Shuman said the $35,000 Culver Schools received in Secured School Safety grant funding this year will also help with the cost. “If there’s still a surplus remaining in that, we will work on putting a window into the elementary vestibule area, so then there’s that secure entry into the elementary,” she said. “So we’re thankful for that. Along with that, we did also receive $10,000 for the planning commission, so we have 45,000 extra dollars added to enhance safety in the school.”
Secure entrances are typically designed to physically prevent visitors from entering a school building without passing through an office first.
