Koontz Lake Fire Department Rescue Vehicle Involved in Crash While Responding to Fatal Accident

Thursday’s fatal crash in Marshall County led to a second accident involving a Koontz Lake Fire Department rescue vehicle. The initial crash happened in the area of U.S. 6 and Quince Road just before 1:00 p.m., when Marshall County Police say a Chevy flatbed truck tried to pass a Buick Century that was about to turn left. The driver of the Buick, Judith Masterson, 69, of Plymouth, eventually died from her injuries.

The crash had U.S. 6 shut down in both directions as emergency crews responded, according to Walkerton Assistant Police Chief Charles Kulp, who was assisting at the scene. He says a vehicle that was stuck in the resulting traffic jam tried to turn around and head back west, but ended up pulling out directly in front of the Koontz Lake Fire Department rescue vehicle rushing to the crash site. The rescue vehicle did reportedly have its lights and sirens on at the time of the crash.

Kulp says the rescue vehicle only sustained minor damage, but the car that pulled out in front of it was most likely totaled. Its juvenile driver was not issued any citations. There were no injuries in the second crash.
