Culver School Board members met last Monday in order to further discuss a potential operating referendum.
Superintendent Karen Shuman stated that this month’s work session was essentially a review of what was covered during a work session in April. Superintendent Shuman said the board members in attendance had the opportunity to ask some questions about the information that has been provided so far and suggest some other areas to research.
Shuman explained, “It’s looking at potentially an operating referendum that would focus on developing programs that would require a higher level of teacher pay, would require a higher number of teachers in order to teach those certain programs.”
Some of the programs that would require these additional resources include a STEM Program for K-12, high ability courses for all grade levels and adding programs that meet the new graduation pathways.
The superintendent said it is imperative that officials are approaching the process with integrity and looking at the full scope of the situation. Shuman mentioned that members are currently assessing whether or not these opportunities could be available without a referendum.
In the regular session, members considered a municipal advisory services agreement with H.J. Umbaugh and Associates, related to the 2018 operating referendum. The firm will be working with school officials as they weigh their options and look into all the elements involved with this process. They will act on the agreement during their next meeting.
