Sand Hill Farm Developer Kevin Berger recently reached out to community members to remind them about an exciting opportunity through the Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County.
The Sand Hill Farm development will be providing a site for a Habitat for Humanity home and the organization is still looking for a local family to fill it.
Officials are anticipating that the site will be made available later this year and construction will most likely begin in 2019. Interested parties are encouraged to apply now as they need to assess whether or not they fulfill certain eligibility requirements. One major thing that Habitat officials look for during the homeowner selection process is a family’s willingness to partner through “sweat equity”.
The phrase essentially means the 300 service hours that each adult member of the recipient family must put in. Families are permitted to recruit friends and other family members to assist with sweat equity hours.
This requirement can be accomplished by working with Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County ReStore, helping on your home, as well as others’, and any additional coursework involved with the application process.
Additional requirements include income specifications, 6-months of recorded employment and verifiable credit experience and the ability to make payments.
In his alert, Berger mentioned that one value of getting into the program is that Habitat for Humanity representatives can work with families to help clear up credit issues and other barriers to homeownership.
The application for admission states that Habitat Homes are sold at no profit, with no interest mortgages that are repaid over 20-years. The payments go to Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County and the money is used to help build more houses for others who are “inadequately sheltered.”
