Argos Community School Corporation Shares Tips for National Reading Month

As we enter the final week of National Reading Month, parents are reminded to be a part of their child’s reading regimen to help instill a love for books at an early age.

Earlier this month, representatives with the Argos Community School Corporation shared a few helpful tips to their website that were written by Kidder Media Editor Rebekah Whirledge.

One tip encourages parents to take their children book browsing. This can be done online from home, in a bookstore or at the local library. Don’t hesitate to consult family, friends, teachers and librarians for book recommendations that would appeal to your child’s specific interests.

Designate a special reading spot in your house. It doesn’t have to be an especially big area but you can fill it with pillows and blankets to make it a comfy place to sit and read.

She also suggests picking a book that has a movie as a way to incentive your child to read. After you read the book together, you can watch the movie and engage in a discussion comparing the two.

There’s no doubting that life can get busy, but be sure to make some time aside to read as a family. Whirledge says it is much easier to get everyone reading if it’s done together. She adds that this can mean reading one book as a family or just setting a designated amount of time each night that everyone reads their own book.

Though these ideas were shared in recognition of National Reading Month, they can be utilized year round to help strengthen your family’s bond with books.
