A Markham, Illinois man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly speeding on U.S. 30 and driving under the influence.
According to Marshall County police, 38-year-old Raphael Newkirk was on U.S. 30 between King Road and Iris Road when an officer noted that Newkirk was traveling at 106 mph in a 60 mph area.
Police say a red light helped slow Newkirk’s vehicle so an officer could initiate a traffic stop. During an investigation, officers found marijuana in Newkirk’s possession, according to the report. The report also indicated that Newkirk was under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance.
While at the hospital, police say Newkirk refused a certified test. A search warrant was obtained and reportedly found that Newkirk had marijuana in his system and he was almost two times the legal limit in Indiana.
Newkirk was booked into the Marshall County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle with a BAC of .15 or more, operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangering, operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a controlled substance, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.
