The Indiana Department of Transportation awarded the City of Plymouth with funds to restore the historic LaPorte Street Footbridge.
According to city officials, the downtown landmark will be reconstructed with a new bridge deck and railing, repair of the superstructure and substructure, full cleaning and painting of all components, and new ADA accessible approaches.
The total amount awarded on Friday, Feb. 16, is $1,310,400.
The LaPorte Street Footbridge was originally constructed in 1889 and remains one of the oldest footbridges in the State of Indiana. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
City officials will meet with INDOT for project coordination soon, according to a news release. Planning and construction is expected to take place over the next few years.
