A large gas leak was reported in the 8,000 block of Union Road shortly after 3 a.m. Monday after the occupants of the home awoke to the smell of natural gas and recognized the sound of the leak.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, an investigation found that an unknown vehicle ran into the side of the residence and caused damage to the NIPSCO gas meter, underground gas pipes, and NIPSCO pole, plus damage to the front porch and railing of the residence.
Police say the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and report the accident.
Firefighters from the Plymouth Fire Department and NIPSCO crews responded to the hazmat situation and assisted in the clean up of the scene.
