A single-vehicle crash has claimed the life of a Triton High School student. Cameron Scarberry, 16, of Etna Green, was killed in a crash near Atwood Sunday. School officials say he died instantly. The fatality was confirmed Monday by Kosciusko County Coroner Tony Ciriello.

Officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department say it happened shortly after 1:00 p.m. on County Road 650 North near 700 West. Investigators believe Scarberry was driving eastbound in a 1994 GMC, when he apparently over-corrected, causing it to roll into a field on the northern edge of the roadway.

Cameron’s younger brother, Jared, was also in the car. He was reportedly able to crawl out and get help. Jared was taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Triton Superintendent Donna Burroughs says he’s now doing well and should make a full recovery.

Cameron was a junior at Triton, where he was on the football and wrestling teams since his freshman year. He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Students.

In a statement Monday, Burroughs called Cameron “a hard worker and a fine young man.” She says school counselors, mental health staff from the Bowen Center, and local pastors were all at the school Monday to help students through the grieving process.

The crash remains under investigation.
