The Plymouth School Board got an update Tuesday on first graders’ reading progress. Students from Menominee Elementary School demonstrated what they’ve learned during the first month of the school. Principal Steven Boyer explained that first grade is when students make the most progress, when it comes to reading foundation.
The first graders showed board members how they’re able to sound out words, using concepts such as open and closed consonants, and voiced and unvoiced syllables. They also get help from a few tools, such as hand signs, dry erase boards, and even Slinkys.
Following the presentation, School Board President Todd Samuelson noted the importance of reading and how it opens doors to all kinds of opportunities.
