The Bourbon Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee held an open house last night to gather public opinion on the proposed Envision Bourbon 2030 Comprehensive Plan.
The plan covers several elements including population, housing and neighborhood conditions, economy and labor force trends, land use, roads and utilities infrastructure, public facilities, and protection of natural and cultural resources.
The town plans to focus on making the community livable by making available affordable housing. Future plans could include construction of a small-scale urban apartment building.
Additionally, the town is looking to upgrade its wireless network to support a high-speed fiber optic system. The town would also like to upgrade water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructures to handle new development and reduce costs.
A safe walking and biking experience is also included in the comprehensive plan. Paths could connect residents to the downtown area, Triton schools and parks.
The Town of Bourbon wants to offer opportunities through quality education and workforce training including the preservation of schools, parks, the library, and the community center. The comprehensive plan also offers suggestions such as using available space for retail, entertainment and other projects that could support generational lifestyle choices.
By developing this comprehensive plan, the Town of Bourbon will be able to qualify for grants to assist with the projects outlined in the plan.
The Bourbon Steering Committee, Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG) and the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation worked on creating the document that can be viewed at www.bourbon-in.gov.
