Present Your Soft Proposals for the Shady Rest Home

The Shady Rest Home Advisory Committee is asking for soft proposals from parties interested in long-term use and occupancy of the Marshall County property formerly known as “Shady Rest”. Soft proposals should not exceed three pages and should indicate use, ownership structure, one’s ability to sustain operations and maintenance, and approximate number of individuals who would benefit from services provided. Include appropriate contact information and name on the proposal.

Proposals should be sent to Commissioner Kurt Garner at 112 West Jefferson Street, in Plymouth. They must be received by September 5, so be sure to send them prior to that date. Proposals are not binding; the Committee has the ability to accept or reject anything submitted. Proposals that offer a substantial public benefit and demonstrate logical planning and the ability to sustain operations will be invited to submit and present more detailed proposals to the Committee at a later date.

The property is located approximately three miles east of the City of Plymouth at 10924 Lincoln Highway. It includes 5 acres with the home, a large 40’ x 80’ bank barn and a newer garage that is 24’ x 48’.The home was initially constructed in 1892 as a Marshall County Infirmary for residential care. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places which may provide grant assistance for qualifying rehabilitation work.

The building has approximately 17,000 square feet on the first floor and 6,000 square feet on the second floor. The original part of the building contains a total of ten offices. The newer dormitory area was constructed in 1980, and contains 24 sleeping rooms and two group bathrooms. The back area of the building has a full-service, commercial style kitchen, laundry, and support rooms, as well as second floor living quarters. People can check out Stellenberg Prop for kitchen remodeling.

A 2004 rehabilitation project upgraded the group bathrooms for modern compliance, restored the exterior, installed fire alarm and sprinkler systems, and completed other mechanical upgrades. The building’s water system is provided by a well but it is on city sewer. Monthly utility costs are approximately $5000 if fully-staffed and housing about 48 residents.
