Plymouth City Council to Meet in Special Session Tonight

Plymouth City Building

The Plymouth City Council will meet in special session tonight.

The members will discuss an ordinance regarding a municipal motor vehicle license excise surtax and a municipal wheel tax. The ordinance was called as first reading during the council’s regular session on Monday, Aug. 14. The ordinance would help gather funds for the construction and rehabilitation of roads and streets. It was suggested that implementing a wheel tax could take some relief off of other line items in the budget to help with other General Fund needs.

If approved, the council can set a rate for an excise surtax between $7.50 up to $25.00 per vehicle. A wheel tax rate can be set from $5.00 up to $40.00 per vehicle. The excise surtax is for small passenger vehicles and trucks. The wheel tax would be applicable on buses, farm trailers, semis and other large vehicles. If the minimum amount is enacted, it would bring in $80,000 while the maximum amount would generate $320,000 on an annual basis, according to figures provided by the Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP).

The council is also anticipated to receive information on a salary survey and consider the 2018 salary ordinance. In addition, a discussion on the 2018 budget is on tonight’s agenda. A permanent supporting housing initiative will be presented by Mary Gibson.

Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the council chambers in the Plymouth City Building.
