Residents in Indiana have experienced severe weather already this spring season including tornadoes. Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery says the best way to be prepared is to be weather aware.
Avery encourages everyone to take shelter if severe weather is forecast. If you see lightning, take cover immediately.
“Lightning fatalities average about 51 per year,” noted Avery. “We have a lot of outdoor activities going on – athletic events, fairs and different types of festivals. Folks just need to be weather aware when they go out. If the weather does look like it’s turning bad, make sure you have a plan to get into someplace that’s safe.”
He also urges families to have a plan in case disaster strikes.
Avery says he still has a few all hazards radios available in the EMA office.
“We have about 10 radios for those folks who may want one and cannot afford to go out and buy one. I would need them to come in and provide me a name and address and I’ll get one issued to them. I’ll program it free of charge.”
