This year’s IRead 3 results for the North Liberty and Walkerton Elementary students is down a little this year, according to Walkerton Elementary School Assistant Principal Rebecca Cummings.
She gave the John Glenn Community School Board the results that had been embargoed by the state. She said 81 percent of the North Liberty students passed while 89 percent of Walkerton Elementary students passed. Out of the 78 North Liberty students who took the test, 15 did not pass. Seven out of 64 students at Walkerton Elementary School did not pass.
Most of the students who did not pass are in special education classes and will be waived by the state. However, all but four of those students chose to retake the test. Those who need to take the retake test will participate in an intense summer school IRead3 remediation class. Cummings said that 95-98 percent of students pass the retake exam after this rigorous summer course. The students retake the test either July 19 or July 20 and the school will receive the results in five days.
Pam Hayes will be teaching the course. She was commended by the elementary administration and the school board members for her efforts in her creative strategies in getting nearly all of the students to pass the retake exam.
