Members of the Monterey Fire Department are teaming up with the American Red Cross to ensure members of their community stay safe in the event of a house fire. They will be doing a door-to-door canvassing campaign on Sunday, June 11 starting at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
Red Cross officials say home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. On average, seven people die each day from home fires, and a fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Annually, home fires cause 2,500 deaths and roughly $7 billion in property damage.
The Home Fire Preparedness Campaign aims to save lives, reduce injuries and build more resilient communities by raising awareness facilitating preventive actions and fostering community preparation.
Nationwide the goal is to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent over the next 5 years.
Fire Departments throughout Pulaski County will be doing Home Fire Campaigns in the upcoming months.
