The Bremen Redevelopment Commission donated $35,000 to the Bremen Community School Corporation to purchase equipment for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students.
Bremen School Superintendent Dr. Jim White said the RDC funded the purchase of a shop bot which is a popular piece of equipment that the STEM students use in the shop.
“Basically, it’s a CNC wood working machine,” explained Dr. White. “They bought a large version of it that uses four-by-eight sheets of plywood to turn into furniture or anything the kids can imagine. To augment those, they were kind enough to fund the purchase of three desk top models which use smaller pieces of wood but the same programming. More students will have more time to be able to work on some smaller projects because not everything requires such a small machine.”
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said it’s a unique opportunity for the town and the school.
“For the kids who are not going to go to college, this is good training and all of the plants in town that we’ve talked to said they’d like to see this type of experience coming out of the high school,” said Weldy. “We’re teaching them how to handle these type of machines. The school is excited about it and the businesses are excited about it so it’s a good thing for both.”
The Bremen School Board members accepted the donation during their meeting this week.
