A petition was brought before the Argos Community School Board Monday night requests that the school board members be chosen by an election and not by appointment.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Boyd said the petition was submitted by a group of citizens in town and more discussions are in the planning stages in the matter.
“Those who petitioning for an elected board and the current board are going to sit down together and try to collaboratively come up with a plan for an elected board that will be workable and acceptable in the community,” said Dr. Boyd.
Currently, two residents are appointed by the Green Township Advisory Board, two residents are appointed by the Walnut Township Advisory Board and the last appointee is decided by the Argos Town Council.
Dr. Boyd suggests that this could be a positive move.
“I think that democracy in the 21st century says that folks want a voice in who’s going to govern them and certainly the schools are a big part of the governing structure of any community. We’ve been appointed since 1964 but maybe it’s time to take a look at the elected side of it.”
