The John Glenn School Board discussed pay for a substitute Spanish teacher for the remainder of the school year.
Superintendent Richard Reese said a high school Spanish teacher is going on maternity leave soon and the position needs to be filled with a substitute teacher in her absence. Reese noted that Spanish is a “hard to fill” area at the school corporation and it’s as difficult to fill the void with a licensed teacher.
The substitute teacher that High School Principal William Morton suggested hiring is one that has filled in as a Spanish teacher in the past. She has a degree in the subject, but she does not have a teaching license.
Reese said that he discussed this issue with the legal representatives at the Indiana Department of Education. He was told that making a pay exception in this case is possible since Spanish is a “hard to fill” area. The substitute would be paid the same rate as a first year teacher as she would be doing comparable work to the contracted teacher.
The board unanimously approved the exception to the substitute teacher pay as presented. The pay will be $187.78 a day.
