Elkhart Man Injured after Reportedly Crashing Into Semi while Using Smartphone App

Driving while using the smartphone app Facetime apparently caused an Elkhart man to crash his car head-on into a semi truck near Bremen Monday morning. Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department say it happened around 4:00 a.m. on U.S. 6 near Miami Highway.

According to the incident report, Edwin Ceniceros Lopez, 22, of Elkhart admitted to using Facetime while driving eastbound on U.S. 6. Officers believe he crossed the center line and crashed into a semi tractor pulling a tanker-style trailer in the westbound lane.

Ceniceros Lopez was taken to Memorial Hospital with multiple fractures and dislocations. The semi driver, Rodney Keeling, 55, of Plymouth, was taken to Community Hospital of Bremen for possible injuries.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department reminds residents not to use their smartphones while driving.
