The Plymouth School Board accepted the retirement of Superintendent Dan Tyree Monday night. The school board members praised him for his years of service and mentioned that he is leaving the school corporation better than how he found it.
Tyree has been in education for 41 years. Two of those years were spent in the Knox Community School Corporation and the rest in the Plymouth school system.
Tyree recently underwent a kidney transplant and sees priorities a little differently.
“Most of the days I’ve come to work, I’ve enjoyed myself at work and didn’t say ‘oh gosh, I’ve got to go to work again today’,” explained Tyree. “However, after my operation I had some thoughts that just maybe it wasn’t the most important thing in the world to me and that I needed to have some other priorities in my life.”
He says public school corporations are facing a rough road in the legislature. He says the Plymouth School Corporation is in good standing, but could see the effects of decisions to be made soon by lawmakers.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to keep the funds where they need to be so we can have good teachers. At some point, every school is going to face this and I see this coming down the pike to Plymouth. I just hope my replacement is somebody who is excited about something like that because it’s going to be difficult.
The search for a new superintendent will begin soon. Tyree hopes that someone will be in place by the middle of May. Superintendent Tyree’s last day as superintendent is June 30.
