The city building in downtown Plymouth will undergo some necessary renovation work this fall.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter said several instances have led to the decision to renovate.
“We have a pretty bad HVAC and boiler system here and I found that my ceiling was on my desk and floor with a whole bunch of water one day and that was the third time in eight years that that had happened. There will be a lot of changes. It’ll be a better system, a more efficient city hall,” said Mayor Senter.
Senter said the mayor’s office will move to the second floor of the building along with the council chambers. Those are just a couple of the many changes that will take place.
“There will be an elevator where my office is now, the clerk-treasurer’s office will expand as they need some more room and this office here and the old council chambers will be mostly storage. The city attorney has an office upstairs now. The south side of the hallway up there is actually the chamber of commerce. We’re hoping to take advantage of that as well.”
The proposed cost of the renovation is estimated at $2.5 million, but the hope is to pare down the cost by the time the bids come in for the project this summer.
The city is working with the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission on this project. The funding is expected to come from the Redevelopment Commission’s coffers as a budgeted project this year.
The work is expected to begin in August, as long as plans run according to schedule.
