The John Glenn School Board members held a lengthy discussion this week concerning an idea of expanding the weight training program for students.
The class would be offered as an elective in addition to the current facility availability before and after school.
Superintendent Richard Reese brought the notion to the school board and explained that athletes, both boys and girls, in any sport can be properly trained to participate in athletics by utilizing the state-of-the-art weight training facility on site. Those students who don’t participate in athletics but would be interested in personally getting physically fit would also benefit from the addition of two classes at the high school.
Superintendent Reese admitted that he isn’t sure how the program will be staffed, but that can be worked out as the details are finalized. He said the funding impact would be extremely minimal. Students can get credit when taking the class.
All of the school members had positive comments regarding the idea to expand. They expressed interest in assisting students wishing to be in proper physical shape when in competition. They noted that weight training can reduce injury while making the students stronger. It can also boost self confidence to the students who are interested in improving strength as a life skill by learning from an instructor.
It was also mentioned that students who are interested in signing up for the military can benefit from the class for conditioning for the armed forces.
The board members gave their blessing to proceed in gathering more information to make a weight training program class available to students during the regular school day. More concrete details will be presented to board in a future meeting.
