Culver Elementary School to Get New Water Fountains, Thanks to Student Council and Elkay

Some Culver Elementary School students are working to improve student health while reducing waste.

A bottle-filling water fountain was installed this week, thanks to the efforts of the Culver Elementary Student Council. “They thought that they would try to encourage students to drink more water instead of sugary beverages and stuff, and also to help reduce waste in the landfill,” says parent Sarah Youvan. “Our water fountains are very old, and you have to go to the water fountain to drink out of them. So the kids thought that if we did one that filled up a water bottle, that it would be better all around. And so they decided to raise money doing that.”

Youvan says students sold Valentine’s Day Candygrams to raise money to buy the water fountain. However, she says Elkay offered to donate one instead. It was installed near the third through sixth grade classrooms. Meanwhile, Youvan says students will continue raising money to purchase a second water fountain for the gymnasium.
