The Culver Community Schools Corporation is adding some money into its Rainy Day Fund, but hopes for a longer-term funding solution from state lawmakers.
Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell says the school board approved the transfer Monday of $500,000 into the Rainy Day Fund. “Our funding is always very critical here at Culver,” he says, “so any time we can move some money into Rainy Day, that’s a positive for us right now.” He says that money is coming out of the Capital Projects and Transportation funds.
At the same time, school officials are also keeping an eye on legislation that would reintroduce the small school grant. “I think that’s an important step for our legislators to take,” Kitchell says. “We hope that they look at that bill seriously and that there’s enough support down in Indianapolis to get that bill passed.”
In the meantime, Kitchell says the school corporation has to depend on its Rainy Day Fund to help cover expenses, “Now hopefully, things will happen at the legislative side of it this session and give some small schools a little bit of a break, hopefully. But for now, Rainy Day funds.”
The small school grant bill was introduced last week in the Indiana House of Representatives. It’s been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee for further consideration.
